Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Sean Mullen attended Sacred Heart Academy for his high school years and later played baseball for Brooklyn College. As a Senior, he received All-Metro honors in baseball and named All-NAIA First Team and All-American Honorable Mention in soccer. He was signed by the Richmond Kickers in 1999 and made his debut for the team on April 28, 1999 in a game against the Harrisburg Heat. He scored his first goal in his Kickers debut.
Mullen was drafted by the Tampa Bay Mutiny in the third round of the 2000 MLS Superdraft. He played four games for the Mutiny in 2000. In 2001, he played two seasons with the Mutiny and in 2003, he was loaned out to the Vancouver Whitecaps where he made six appearances. Mullen then moved to the USISL before moving to the USL First Division with the Richmond Kickers in 2005 where he played the rest of his career. He was named to the USL First Division All-League Team twice, first in 2005 and again in 2008. Mullen retired in 2009 after the final game of the season.
Mullen later played for Miami FC and FC Wichita before signing with Saint Louis FC in 2012.
