False Dreams: A Beginner's Guide To Angel Scares, Obscurities, And All Things Strange. By Rita Mulcahy - Compiled by Kevin H. Thrash A handful of film’s basic stars have a specialized high quality: Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Downey Jr. and, of course, Kevin Bacon. These people’s names exist on TV sets, in book store windows, in the movie theater, on Hollywood Boulevard, and in various other places around the world. But most of the people you see on the screen do not have a single other name outside of a hundred years of film-related literature. These individuals are known simply as “the extras” or, if they are playing a major character like a bad guy, as “the villain.” These are the individuals that, in our minds, we see in roles of significant power. We can’t see them without thinking that they’re doing things that we can’t be doing on our own, they’re so important to the film. But who are these people, exactly? We, as movie-viewers and as aspiring writers, know very little about the characters that come off our silver screen screens, at least in terms of who they are and what they’ve been up to for the previous hundred years. In fact, we know nothing other than that their names are included in the credits. We see the names scrawled along the sides of the screen. We see them over the actors’ heads. We see them on the bills posted outside the theaters. We see them in the advertisements on the movie marquee, which declares, “Rent this film.” And we see them on the DVD cases that will hopefully ensnare us when we pay a few dollars for this new cinematic experience. They are, by and large, faceless. The average American is not going to see the faces of every single extra in the title sequences and between scenes of any given movie. But many of them do have names. And there are a few of them that stand out in a particular way. To begin with, some people are credited with inventing the role that they are currently playing. They are credited for writing the screenplay and then sharing it with actors to perform. They are credited for directing. And they are also credited for the extras. Next, there are the directors of photography (“DOP’s”), who are responsible for crafting the look and feel of a given film. For their work, DOP’s are often credited with 595f342e71
